Once Lost, Forever Found (Volume #1) by Nina Jean Slack

Published on Saturday, November 23, 2013 by
Written in the form of a memoir, Effie tells the story of how she and her brother, Vladimir, had become lost in the world; their wayward teenage years. Her internal struggles and emotions threaten to eat her alive. Memories of her childhood remind her of the innocence she once possessed. She has been hurt so many times in her life, the world can be so cruel. She knows there is more to life than this, she knows true love exists. There is a breaking point; there is pain, longing, self-loathing, loss, regret, anger, sadness, heartbreak, screams that will never be heard…there is hope. Where can hope be found in this world? How do you find yourself amongst the turmoil? Find yourself in this unforgettable, touching, relatable story of two young hearts who discover what it means to be Once Lost, Forever Found.

What are the main themes of your book?

Some of the most important themes in Once Lost, Forever Found is finding yourself in a world that seems so cruel and empty. It is about learning how to live life to the fullest and overcome depression, even finding love and it’s meaning. When everything seems lost, when there is no hope, where can you find it? Effie (the main character) learns how to overcome her struggles in life as she recalls the events of her most troublesome years; her teens.

Who or what inspired your story?

I initially came up with the idea for this story when I thought about my teenage years. I wanted to write about the emotions and feelings of a teenage girl through experience. I poured my heart and soul into Effie’s character and created her in a way that she can be relatable and inspiring to all who read her story. Most teens these days are struggling with so many different things, so many emotions flow through their young bodies…who will tell their story? Who would be brave enough to share their own story of their most emotional memories, their struggles, their coming of age, most importantly, finding themselves and their place in the world?

What do you like best about your primary characters?

Effie: She is kind-hearted, thoughtful, loving and caring. She would never hurt a soul. She isn’t complicated in the way she personifies herself; she is who she is, she doesn’t put on a front. Although she can be shy at times and an introvert; keeping to herself most of the time, she is never afraid to say what’s on her mind…especially when she is angry, heartbroken, or completely happy.

Vladimir (Vlad): He is strong physically and emotionally; he hides his emotions so well on the outside…it is one of his gifts that he learned from early adolescence. He is very protective over his younger sister, Effie, and he would do anything for her. Although he has many personal problems, he puts them aside to help others that he cares about.

What are their worst peculiarities?

Effie: Because she is kind-hearted and caring, she can be gullible sometimes…which is not a good thing in her case. She can be very emotional at times too, which can get exhausting. Because she has no one to confide in, she talks to her older brother, Vlad, about everything and anything, she even looks up to him and wishes she could be more outgoing like he is and more emotionally strong. Wishing to follow in her brother’s footsteps though, can be very detrimental to her well-being; it could damage her. She doesn’t know that Vlad is struggling with his own demons inside, and he won’t tell a soul.

Vladimir (Vlad): He is a typical young boy about to become a man, so he is interested in the things most young men are; sex, parties, college, friends, and so on…His only vices in the world, are coffee and cigarettes…he has always smoked since a very young age. Although focusing on the ones he loves (his friends and family) can be a good thing, he doesn’t focus on himself at all. He doesn’t want to help himself, and if he did, he might think it is too late…He also doesn’t believe in the romantic kind of love. It is non-existent to him and always will be…or so he thinks.

How does your main character evolve?

Effie starts out as a young, immature girl who feels lost in so many ways; not knowing who she really is, where to fit in, how to fit in, how to deal with her emotions that seem to overcome her and devour her…she feels used, hurt and alone. Over time, she learns to just deal with life and all the baggage that comes with it…you can’t alter the past, can you? She overcomes her worst fears, and defeats her worst enemy; herself. She also learns a few things from the people in her life (the good and the bad ones).

What’s the principal message you want to send to your audience?

“If ever you feel lost, terrified, alone, emotionally and physically drained…when you feel like depression has overpowered you, and that the world itself, has devoured you…just remember that you are not alone, you are loved, you are a beautiful story waiting to be told.” -Nina Jean Slack, Once Lost, Forever Found (Vol. #1)

Don’t give in to your inner, most darkest emotions. No matter what you have been through, are going through, or about to go through…don’t let it kill you. Don’t give in, don’t let go of that beautiful soul inside of you…………….
