Saving Alexander by Susan Mac Nicol

Published on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 by

Punishing himself for a horrific past that is not his fault, bestselling author Alexander Montgomery seeks redemption and love—and perhaps he will find it.

Famous author though he may be, Alexander Montgomery is not someone you take home to meet Mother. Seriously flawed, damaged by a horrific past, he’s trying hard to claw his way back to normality. But how can anyone respect what he truly is? His therapy involves regular sessions at Study in Scarlet, an exclusive S&M club.

Then comes Sage. Tall, with black hair and blue eyes, an up-and-coming actor with impossible charm and boy-next-door good looks, he’s the perfect choice to play the leading man in a TV adaptation of Alex’s last best-seller. Even more, he is a man you introduce to your family. Which Alex would do—if he weren’t taken by another man who offers the punishments Alex prays will wipe away the past and make him the person he wants to be. Yet, perhaps there is another path to redemption. If only the solution would reach out and touch him.

What are the main themes of your book?

The main theme in Saving Alexander, (but perhaps my rose coloured glasses are on), is that no matter what has happened in your life, with your own need to triumph, the right support and love, you can overcome it. Of course there are times when people can’t see their way out of the depths they have sunk to and have no desire to. I’ve experienced this first hand. But with commitment and the wish to overcome within YOU, I believe you can do anything.

Who or what inspired your story?

I am Alex Montgomery. I have a huge fan girl crush on a British actor called Benedict Cumberbatch. I wrote a series of novels with him in mind for the character, Bennett Saville, in the fervent hope one day they might be turned into a TV series, and Cumberbatch could play the part of Bennett. Yes, I know. It’s sad. So I thought it would be fun to write about a romance novelist who did this but where his dream came true.

I wanted to write a really angst driven story with a sexy, tortured individual with a lot of baggage and another who was driven beyond what we might call normal human boundaries to help him get through it. I wanted the torment and the conflict suffered by each of them in their different way to drive the story and of course, end up with a HEA.

What do you like best about your primary characters?

Alex is a romance novelist, like me. He’s damn tough, despite having really been through an incredibly traumatic experience. He just wants to be loved and love in return. He’s warm, funny and intelligent. But he has needs that control him and he tries to overcome them. He’s a real fighter.

Sage is passionate, sensual, and when he falls in love, he’ll do anything for you. He’s a little moody, but he realises this and tries to manage it. He’s also got a heart the size of the Taj Mahal, full of empathy and an overwhelming desire to help people. He’s protective and loving.

What are their worst peculiarities?

I think it goes without saying that Alex is damaged, driven to self abase himself from guilt and fear that he’s less of a man that he should be.

Sage suffers from black moods, is insatiably curious and won’t let go and is sometimes his own worst enemy.

How does your main character evolve?

I never talk about just one MC, always both of them as they both play an equal part in my stories. Alex finds himself more accepting of his faults and his needs. He finds he can begin to trust someone again and even love them. He’s never let himself do that before.

Sage finds levels of empathy and support he never thought he’d had. He finds an inner strength that leads his nurturing nature to face incredible odds yet manages to overcome them in his passion to fix things. He learns patience and tolerance.

What’s the principal message you want to send to your audience?

This book is meant to entertain, make people feel emotions and fall in love with two men as they take the same journey. There’s a few underlying messages in it – that together miraculous things can be achieved, that people are more than just the sum of their parts and that successful relationships take a lot of work…
