Powerful yet tormented modern warlock Quinn Fairmont must initiate the silver-eyed Cade Mairston into the world of witchfinders, Withinners, and what can happen when two men fall truly, madly, deeply in love.

In modern London there lurks a warlock, Quinn Fairmont. Dangerous, powerful, tortured, sharing his body with the soul of an ancient Welsh sorcerer, Quinn is never alone—and never wholly himself. He fights against all those who would exploit his kind. He takes pleasure where he can find it.

In the forest of Hampstead Heath, Quinn’s hometown, Cade Mairston appears to him like a waking dream. Lithe, lean and silver-eyed, he evokes feelings in Quinn unlike any other: lust with true affection, immediate and shocking. Cade is clearly more than he seems. And yet, if a man of the world, Cade is innocent. He knows nothing of warlocks, witchfinders or Withinners. He knows nothing of what he is, what he might be, or what he might feel. For him, the story is just beginning. Magyck, peril and passion await.

What are the main themes of your book?

I think there are a few. Redemption, unconditional love and sacrifice. Redemption for Quinn in that Cade helps him face all the demons he has in his closet and enables him to get past them. Quinn is a man tortured by past decisions and events and his role as the Grand Master keeps his human side at bay, not allowing him to grieve properly and forgive himself. Cade awakens Quinn’s human side through the sheer power of unconditional love. Quinn has made sacrifices in his personal life and makes many more to save Cade.

Who or what inspired your story?

The  ‘Who’ – I wanted Quinn to be a blond, tough Alpha male personality and Cade to be a dark, lean bundle of energy to indicate the opposites – light and dark. Who better to inspire Quinn than the gorgeous Daniel Craig as James Bond with his ruthlessness and inner hardness. And as for Cade, I fell completely in love with Éric Bélanger, the Canadian ice hockey player, and modelled Cade on him.  I recreated my fantasy of seeing these two men together in my own characters.

The ‘What’ – I had a yen to write about witches and wizards and create a layer above the world we call ‘normal’. I love fantasy and world building and I wanted to give myself the challenge to write something that I hadn’t done before.

What do you like best about your primary characters?

I love Quinn’s capacity to be strong and dominant yet with Cade, find the softer side of himself to the point that he actually sees it as a weakness. He’s a multi faceted character and having someone like Taliesin, who’s a complete Alpha and doesn’t have the range of human emotions that Quinn has, makes him even more complicated.

Cade- I love his feistiness, the fact that he’s not truly an Alpha male but he can put Quinn in his place with some softly spoken words, or a frown or a sarcastically chosen turn of phrase. He doesn’t need to be dominant, he uses emotions and his own sense of what’s right to get Quinn to behave.

What are their worst peculiarities?

I’m not sure they are peculiarities, but Quinn is an arrogant sod, secretive and thinks he needs to bear the brunt of the world on his own shoulders. He holds back. Cade is vulnerable, unsure of his place at Quinn’s side and not sure how far he can push Quinn to reveal anything about who Cade is.

How do your main characters evolve?

Quinn evolves from a man who is used to existing for himself and his people, to a man capable of loving another man before any of this. He finds his human side again after so many tragedies and learns that he can open himself up to another person in his life.

Cade finds he can be strong for someone else, that he is the Yin to someone’s Yang and that he has a rightful place as the voice of reason beside a man who used to be a little on the edge.

What’s the principal message you want to send to your audience?

Read, enjoy and come back for more! There’s no secret message in this book. This is a book about romance, danger, intrigue, love, sex, spun in imagination, which hopefully leaves them feeling good and remembering Cade and Quinn long after the book is closed.

What’s the nicest thing anyone has said about your book?

Paul Berry, Gay Media Reviews – ‘I completely loved this beautifully and highly detailed written Paranormal story! This wasn’t a predictable story by any means. How Susan Mac Nicol takes us on a ride through this very creative and engrossing world that you will not forget, anytime soon and will be wanting more and more of it. I am a huge fan of this author and Double Alchemy, doesn’t disappoint by any means at all. I highly recommend this hot, steamy, love, paranormal and so beautifully written story!’

    • Thanks for such a lovely feature post and for the discerning questions! Sometimes they are hard to answer as you get so wrapped up in your characters and the story that the motivations you had to write them in the first place become second nature to you, but not always to the reader. So being able to answer them with some thought is great :)

      • So true, Sue, when you’re familiar with your own story and characters you often think it’s all too obvious to the reader. Sometimes they need a little help to see the motivations.

Thank you for stopping by. It’s always so lovely to see you.

    • Wow! You never fail to impress me, Virtual Writers! Can’t wait to check out your recommendations every week. Thank you!

    • I love learning about new books and characters and this sounds like an awesome read! Going to have a look at it on Goodreads.

    • Wow, just read the author bio at the bottom and am stunned – the author has written so many books in such a short time. That’s incredible. How do you do it, Susan?

      • Shhhh…it’s a secret. I’m actually a clone…. No, all jokes aside I’m actually a bit of an obsessive and once I decide to write something I have to do it all day every day until I finish. So I grab every waking moment, seven days a week and write like bloody crazy. It drives my family bat crap crazy because I am so driven and they sigh and resign themselves to the fact I’ve disappeared for a while to be with the real people in my head. :)
