Powerful modern warlock Quinn Fairmont has found ecstasy with the silver-eyed and not-quite-human Cade Mairston, but to know true happiness the pair must best both the shadow of a long-ago lover whom Quinn could never resist and an ancient enemy who seeks to destroy love, light and all they hold dear.

A BLINDING LIGHT

It begins with a Book of Shadows discovered by a London coven. The grimoire is as dangerous as it is rare, which is why it evokes modern-day warlock Quinn Fairmont’s desire. He collects objects of great power and beauty—like his lover, Cade Mairston.

Against all odds he and Cade found each other, but their perils have just begun. First is the ex-lover who once held Quinn in thrall. And, someone has been killing warlocks. Could it be one of his own kind? There are those too who would challenge Quinn’s power in their quest to overthrow him as Grand Master. Or is the danger something darker, something invoked inadvertently, rising from the shadows, building from the very inside of a man until it brings an end with a quick flash of light? Of the truth, the surface has only been scratched. Now Quinn and Cade must go deeper and find both answers and an end. They must learn what lurks in the hearts of men…and whether it seeks to love or destroy.

What are the main themes of your book?

I think that anyone can find love and that no one needs to be alone forever. Everyone has someone out there for them. Maybe I’m too romantic but I do believe that. It’s also a story about trust and compromise.

Who or what inspired your story?

The idea for Double Alchemy was sparked by a visit to the village of Mistley in Manningtree. Mistley is the place where the legend and real life character Matthew Hopkins had his base of operations. He’s also rumoured to be buried there in the flat, grey marshes. Matthew was the so called Witchfinder General of Essex, the man the churches and the religious men sent out to hunt and destroy witches. I love the whole idea of the occult, of witches and witchcraft.

What do you like best about your primary characters?

Quinn is tough and uncompromising, but with a soft centre once he finds Cade. Cade is non judgmental, his ability to love unconditional.

What are their worst peculiarities?

I guess Quinn would be described as exceptionally arrogant and very possessive. The fact he talks to himself a lot is probably rather strange too. Of course, we all know he’s conversing with Taliesin. Cade is determined to find out more about his Sprite heritage to the point of half drowning himself in the bathwater, much to Quinn’s concern.

How do your main characters evolve?

Quinn learns to be more humble and also to forgive himself for past transgressions. He softens – he’d say ‘weakens’ but we all know that’s not true. He becomes more human in a way. Cade becomes tougher, finds his inner core of steel, and learns that his existence isn’t all he thought it was.

What’s the principal message you want to send to your audience?

Read, enjoy and come back for more! There’s no secret message in this book. This is a book about romance, danger, intrigue, love, sex, spun in imagination, which hopefully leaves them feeling good and remembering Cade and Quinn long after the book is closed.

What’s the nicest thing anyone has said about your book?

Scott Burkett from GGR-review had this to say which I loved…

How Susan can come up with all of the different aspects of this story still boggles my mind.  For instance Quinn can summon Taliesen and have him appear in today’s time which sends Quinn back to where Taliesen came from. This comes in handy because then Taliesen can teleport them to a different place almost instantly, then when they arrive they switch back to their original times.  I think this is brilliant story telling. Can you tell I really liked this book? Scott Burkett
