Second on the Right by Elizabeth Los

Published on Friday, May 9, 2014 by

Spawned from an ancient promise, treachery and intrigue follow the protagonists through our world and one lost to the waves. Bound by an invisible bond, they are thrust into a fantastical world of pirates and demons.

James Benedict is a just man haunted by evil. Pushed to the edge, everything stripped from him, a new man arises . . . a man whose name strikes fear into the hearts of all who hear it: “Captain Hook”.

Eileen Davis was a timid woman. Through a fateful cruise she finds herself in the company of the Captain of the Mistral Thief. With his guidance, and the meddling of the local barista, she eventually finds her inner strength.

Will the two of them unite through time to fulfill the promise of their ancestors or will tempers ignite leading all to failure?

What are the main themes of your book?

Atonement, determination, love, sacrifice: these are some that come to mind. I encourage those who’ve read Second on the Right to share what they felt were the main themes.

Who or what inspired your story?

A friend encouraged me to get it down on paper, but it was Disney’s version of Peter Pan that sparked my imagination. I couldn’t believe a boy would be trustworthy around children when he had a history of violence, cutting off Hook’s hand. Was it merely in self defense, or was there a more sinister act in play?

What do you like best about your primary characters?

Captain Robert Benedict: his passion and spirit for adventure.

James Benedict (aka Captain Hook): his loyalty and love for his wife and family.

Eileen Davis: her take charge attitude when it is needed most.

What are their worst peculiarities?

Captain Robert Benedict: some of his choices, his manipulation of others, no matter the cost, are damaging and irrevocable.

James Benedict (aka Captain Hook): his uncontrollable temper leads to reckless action.

How does your main character evolve?

James Benedict, the main character of the story, evolves from a happily married family man to one full of bitterness after losing everything dear to him. The loss of his right hand would have been tough enough to handle, but when his wife and son are threatened, he is pushed over the edge. His desire to seek revenge on Pan causes him to make choices he wouldn’t have made under normal circumstances. Dealing with Pan is anything but normal. James’ depression mutates into hatred and he finds himself willing to manipulate others to reach his ultimate goal: Pan’s death.

What’s the principal message you want to send to your audience?

I mainly wrote Second on the Right as a fun and easy read. I’ve heard from readers that they enjoyed how certain delicate subjects were broached, such as tragedy and abuse. One theme that seems to be brought up is how the characters’ decisions affect those around them. An act based on passion, whether love or hate, can lead to poor choices.

What’s the nicest thing anyone has said about your book?

I was told I have dealt with delicate subjects with respect. To read the review go here.

    • Thanks for posting and the support of Indie authors! If there are any questions about Second on the Right or me in general, I’m back in town to answer them. I had a Mother’s Day camping weekend with my family, which was fun!
