Message from Viola Mari by Sabrina Devonshire

Published on Monday, January 28, 2013 by

World-renowned oceanographer and meteorite specialist Marissa Jones uncovers evidence that a comet cloud will soon destroy Earth. When aspiring writer and her best friend Jennifer begs her to take a Saturday morning sci-fi writing class, Marissa reluctantly agrees. Writing her real-life story as fiction gives her an astonishing new perspective on the anomalous set of craters she discovered off the La Jolla Coast. But this favor for her friend stirs up more than scientific results…writing teacher Justin Lincoln goads her constantly and taunts her with his irresistible curly blond locks and steely physique he knows only too well make women drool. Marissa teeters on the edge of anger and raging attraction for this irritating man. But it’s a terrible time to let lust call the shots when the world’s about to end and Marissa’s the only one who can save everyone.

  • What are the main themes of your book? Some of the themes explored include love at first sight, loss, heroism, and vulnerability. The story is all presented from Marissa Jones’ first person point-of-view.
  • Who or what inspired your story? So many people inspire every story I write, I could fill a page or more listing their names. I’ve known many female scientists over the years, given that I have an advanced degree in Geosciences. So their personalities helped me come up with Marissa’s nerdy personality. Of course, the fact that I’m a bit of a nerd myself doesn’t hurt anything. My male leads were all inspired by men I’ve been attracted to over the years. I guess you could say I mix them up like soup—I put a cup of Mike with a pinch of Tom and a tablespoon of George until I come up with an appealing “flavor.” Travel also inspires me—a change of scenery often gives me a fresh perspective on my life so I hope transporting my readers to exotic locales will give them a new view that might recharge their batteries a bit.
  • What do you like best about your primary characters? Marissa’s a driven, determined meteorite scientist, known worldwide for her discoveries. She also cares deeply for others and is willing to go to great sacrifice to help them. She’s always been a big risk taker except where her heart’s concerned. Not only is he a feast for any woman’s eyes with his muscular body and long curly hair, Kent Lincoln is also a creative genius. He’s also adventurous and athletic.
  • What are their worst peculiarities? Marissa’s always been a rescuer—both her parents were alcoholics. She’s not used to caring for herself. Marissa is also a geek around guys. She spends too much time studying rocks to have much of a clue how to deal with them. Kent’s a sloppy dresser—he looks more like he’s about to work out than teach a class most of the time. He also has a long history  of serial, quick-and-dirty relationships.
  • How does your main character evolve? Marissa learns that relying on and trusting others is normal and necessary to live a full life rather than a sign of weakness.
  • What’s the principal message you want to send to your audience? I primarily wrote this book to entertain people. Life can be so difficult sometimes—I see so many people struggling and suffering to get through the day. I think what a lot of readers need to help cope and relax is the book that offers a laugh and the great escape. If I’ve delivered that to readers with this book, I’m satisfied.
  • What’s the nicest thing anyone has said about your book?Sabrina Devonshire has exploded into the sci-fi genre with A message from Viola Mari.
